Both the Wisconsin State Journal and Capital Times have published articles about the increased crime in the South Madison area, particularly Penn Park. City officials and neighborhood residents are frustrated about the lack of positive community activities and youth opportunities in Penn Park. However, all parties agree that activities such as the annual Streetball and Block Party are important in building a collective identity and sense of pride for Madison residents.

In 2001, the Streetball and Block Party was organized to support local youth in the Madison community. In nine years, as a result of business and community contributions, over $20,000 has been given directly to more than 6 organizations serving Madison youth, including the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County, the Southside Raiders football and cheerleading teams, and the Urban League of Greater Madison.
